One of the best things about buying legal cannabis in New York: every product wears its receipts. That dense little label is a full biography — who grew it, who tested it, exactly what’s inside, and how strong it is. Here’s how to read the whole thing in the time it takes your pre-roll to reach the bag.
The big number: THC (and its quieter sibling, CBD)
On flower and pre-rolls, THC shows up as a percentage — the share of the product’s weight that’s THC. As a rough map of today’s market: high teens is solidly potent, mid-twenties is strong, and anything beyond that is expert-tier. On edibles and beverages, potency is listed in milligrams (mg) instead — total THC per package and per serving. New York’s standard serving is 10mg THC, and many products come in 5mg or 2.5mg pieces so you can pace gently.
CBD appears the same way. A product with meaningful CBD alongside its THC generally lands softer and rounder than a THC-only heavy hitter — many people specifically shop for balanced ratios like 1:1.
Don’t shop by THC percentage alone — it’s a strength rating, not a quality score. A 19% flower with a gorgeous terpene profile will beat a harsh 30% jar most nights of the week. (More on that in our strains guide.)
The trust section: batch, dates, and the lab
- Batch or lot number. The product’s fingerprint. It ties your exact jar to the harvest it came from and the tests it passed. If you ever have an issue, this number is how we make it right.
- Package and/or harvest date. Fresher is better, especially for flower — terpenes fade with time. If a date is closing in on a year old, that’s a fair reason to pick a different jar (at the casa, it won’t come to that).
- Testing laboratory. New York requires every product to pass testing at an independent, state-permitted lab — potency plus screens for things you don’t want, like pesticides, heavy metals, and mold.
- The QR code. Scan it and you get the Certificate of Analysis (COA) — the full lab report behind the label. You may never read past the first table, but it’s genuinely all there, and that transparency is the whole point of the legal market.
The legal fine print (that’s actually useful)
- Licensed producer and dispensary info. Every hand that touched the product is licensed by New York’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). That’s the chain of custody working for you.
- The universal cannabis symbol. The state-required marker that says “this contains THC” at a glance — it’s there so products are never mistaken for regular snacks. Keep everything in original packaging, away from kids and pets.
- Warning statements. Standard on every product: 21+, don’t drive under the influence, keep out of reach of children. Boilerplate, but the good kind.
- Child-resistant packaging. If the jar takes you two tries to open, congratulations — it’s working.
Label vs. street: why this all matters
Unlicensed shops sell products with labels too — the difference is nobody checks whether the label is true. In the licensed market, the numbers are verified by an independent lab, the batch is traceable, and a real license is on the line if anything’s wrong. That’s what you’re buying at a legal dispensary: not just the product, but the paper trail.
Your 20-second label checklist
- THC — % for flower, mg for edibles. Does the strength match your plans?
- CBD — any balance in the mix?
- Date — is it fresh?
- Batch + lab — present and scannable? (In a licensed shop: always.)
- Servings — for edibles, know your per-piece dose before the first bite.
That’s the whole skill. And if a label ever stumps you, bring it to the counter — decoding stickers is a service we provide with unreasonable enthusiasm. Browse the menu and try your new superpower on a live product.
